Katrina
Assistance Program
2005-2006
In
the wake of hurricane KATRINA devastating aftermath, the members
of Graham Rotary Club voted unanimously to donate $1,000 to a
bona fide program to help the victims of KATRINA. The members
wanted the fund to be spent wisely to have direct impact on the
victims.
The local newspaper The Times-News
established a program to help the Gulfport, Mississippi residents.
The paper highlighted the problems facing the citizens of Gulfport.
Alamance County local governmental institutions are helping their
counterparts in Gulfport. Many of our county citizens and churches
are assisting folks in Gulfport.
The Board of Directors of Graham
Rotary Club asked the Club President to find a Rotary Club in
the Gulfport area to channel our resources for the affected residents
there. It was a challenging task. KATRINA had damaging effects
on Rotary Clubs in the Gulfport area. Many Rotary Clubs are not
functioning due to the devastation. Therefore, it was difficult
to find a Rotary Club to partner with our Club.
After a long search, we were able
to establish contact with Gulfport-Orange Grove Rotary Club in
Gulfport. This is an active club. It is in District 6840. The
Club has an annual event of helping disadvantaged children during
the Christmas season. This year the Club expanded its mission
to help kids normally assisted by other non-functioning Rotary
Clubs.
This year the Gulfport-Orange Grove
Rotary Club established a budget of $75 per child. The club members
will take selected children on a ?shopping spree? to buy clothing,
Christmas gifts and school supplies.
Graham Rotary Club agreed to fund
?shopping sprees? for 13 children. It is sending $975 to ?Kids
Christmas Fund? of Gulfport-Orange Grove Rotary Club. We believe
this is an effective way to help the people directly affected
by KATRINA and with no administrative costs.

It is well that there is
nothing in Rotary so sacred that it cannot be set aside in favor
of things better. This is an experimental age in a changing world,
and all things which are worthwhile and progressive are the cumulative
effects of preceding successes and failures.
